"How is your son doing/studying? 'He is doing/studying very well.'(In my text-book 'how is your son doing' was translated as How well does your son study?" is it correct?)

(In my text-book 'how is your son doing' was translated as How well does your son study?" is it correct?-- I don't think so: 'study well' does not really make much sense to me except as below.)
