Hello. I wonder if 'how much' can be replaced with 'how' in some cases.
The context and the sentence in problem are here: Coaches who regard winning as the most important element in children's sports are known to cut even eight-year-olds from teams. One of the first questions I ask my young patients is how they enjoying sports. Almost nothing makes me feel so sad as when a child looks at me with a crestfallen face and tells me he was cut because he "wasn't good enough." (Sports in School: The Future of an Institution, John R. Gerdy)
I'm curious why the author said "how they enjoying sports", not "how much they enjoying sports." Could one omit 'much' in this case?
Thank you.
Top answer
'Enjoying' should be 'enjoy'. 'Much' could be omitted there, but I doubt it could be generally.
