Because this is a question.
When you ask a question, the order is different. The verb should be before the subject.
-How are you?
This question is asking a person how you are. But as a question, the order should be How are you?

So, try to feel the grammar in the following sentence..Don't memorize the rules, just feel it.
What is your name?
I don't know what your name is.
Notice that the first one, the verb is is before the subject your name. This question is actually asking what your name is, but the order is different when it's a question. However, the second one is a statement, it doens't need any response. So the order is just I don't know what your name is.

This can be confusing at first, but I think you will be able to feel it after knowing the meaning. When you state something and don't expect any reponse, you can just say as the normal order. While if you ask a question and look forward to an answer, you should change the order to make it sound like a question.

I wonder how hard it is to write a simple sentence.
How can you feel this? mhmm..I, as an ESL learner, I don't quite remember those confusing grammar rules.
In my brain, I treat those statement as a thing. I can know a thing, and wonder a thing. So you can just regard how hard it is as a thing. I can know a thing, so I can know how hard it is. Because how hard it is is a thing. While "How hard is it?" is not a thing but a question, a complete sentence...Maybe this would confuse you more, sorry about this part. But this is how I understand this grammar..

How hard it is to write a simple sentence! (This is a statement. This form is sometimes used as an exclamation of surprise. It is uncommon.)
How hard is it to write a simple sentence? (This is a question. It is very common to ask a question this way. I think this is what you meant.)
