"how long" is used to evaluate a period of time or length while "how far" is as they previously said to evaluate a a distance.

They are responsible for me. (I think "for" implies that their responsibility is directed to you, whereas about would implies somethinkg like they are generally responsible for things near or related to you. I think "about" does not sound right because it is not what is usually said, and it implies a lack of specificity.)
