Dear teachers,

Please help me answer correctly the question:HOW FAR OFF FINISHING BUILDING THIS HOUSE ARE YOU ?

Can I answer like this :

1/ I am still a long way off finishing it

2/ I am still 3 more days away from finishing it

To answer your question,

1/ I'm still a long way from finishing it, would be more natural. Your rendition would probably be acceptable if you add "from" (finishing it.)

2/ I still have three more days to go before it's finished, would be more natural. Yours is okay.

If you like "a long way off," you could say, "The completion of the house is stil

Avangi is saying that the sentence in capital letters needs to be looked at. i.e. the question is not well constructed. I guess one of the most straightforward way to convey the idea would be asking when the house will be built. 'When will the house be built?'

I think " When will the house be built ?" has a different meaning from " How far off finishing building the house are you ?. When asking " How far off finishing building the house are you ?. " I mean " How much more is there to do ? "

I was wondering what sort of reply would I get if I said 'When will the house be built?' And also would that be the same as saying 'How much more time will it take for your to finish building the house?' ?

However, if we're assuming that people are actually interested in giving helpful responses, "About two more weeks" could be an expected answer to either question, though the first could be "About March 1, I think."
