How expensive is organic food in your country?

Hi guys,

I've tried to search for organic food suppliers and stores in Moscow, and I found them. However, the prices there are just inhumane! I've heard organic food is more expensive, so I did expect it to be more expensive. I was psychologically ready to pay. But what I saw was a little too much in my opinion.

For example,

10 eggs cost about 0.75 to 1.25 €.
10 organic eggs cost 4.75 €.

1 L cow milk costs 1 to 1.5 €.
1 L organic cow milk is 3 €.

1 kg beef cost 10 €.
1 kg organic beef of the same kind is 32.5 €.

I've realized we just cannot afford eating organic food every day. It can only be an occasional "delicacy", which is obviously not enough to maintain good health.

Are the prices as high in your country/city, and I'm just over-reacting? I imagined the people who care about other people's health would sell something a little more available to everyone.

P.S. What's also upsetting is that there's always a chance you'll buy the same stuff you can find in a supermarket, but you'll buy it for an enormous price. I don't know if this is the case in other countries but this is how it can be in Russia.

In the US, prices for organic produce used to be double or triple that of the ordinary variety. However, the gap has narrowed considerably over the past decade. So you pay more now, but not even close to double.

  • The difference now is down to the extra production cost for fields free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

I would go to the countryside (maybe there is more of that and costs less ) to buy that food if I wanted it, but I don't want it at all, on the contrary. I tried many times to grow different plants of this kind and it is very difficult to keep them healthy. They were continuously attacked by insects and by many other ' things ' and in the end I gave up. Only the brave rosemary stayed with me ... a

Aaahh organic tomatoes! My dream. I know what they taste like because we used to grow them in our garden when I was a kid. Since then I just CAN'T eat ordinary tomatoes from a store, I buy them seldom if ever. I just gave up finding tasty ones /sigh/. If their price was not three or four times higher, I'd definitely pay for that. I really hope the prices here go down too, sooner or later.
