How does this sentence sound to you?

"Most people throwing off charities like philanthropic trucks that don't know how to brake are pretty much a charity case themselves."

My question is,
why is the subject being described as a singular object at the end of the sentence(a charity case them"selves")?
the "are...a charity case" right there looks like a nasty grammar mistake to me.
But I've also heard sentence like "The biggest enemy is our self." which really confuses me, will it be correct to change the sentence as "The biggest enemy is ourselves"?
