How does comma usage work when thanking someone?

For example:

I'm fine, thanks, John.

Anything wrong with the above, comma-wise?

Assuming the question is "How are you?" I would write it thus:

I'm fine. Thanks, John.

But without mentioning a specific name, I would simply write:

Fine, thanks.

Don't append too many responses to one sentence.
