How do you understand "but" here?

There is no doubt that the earth is becoming warmer and it is human activity that has caused this global warming rather than a random but natural phenomenon.

How do you understand "but" here? What's the logical relation here? Is "but" wrongly used here and should it be crossed off?

Hi,

"But" functions as "yet" or "but nevertheless" here. "Random but natural" means "random yet natural".

This is a common usage of "yet" as a conjunction, not an adverb.

He told me the image was ugly, yet I thought it was rather beautiful.

The exam was difficult for me, but nevertheless I got an "A".

What do "random" and "natural" mean here respectively? Can you be a little more specific?

It could have the meaning of 'still'. I guess! the sentence says that global warming is caused by human activity, and not by a random, still natural phenomenon. It means: a random, nevetheless natural phenemenon is not the real cause behind global warming. It is definitely human activity.

Hope this helps,
