'How' do you think?

Is it wrong to say 'how do you think'? Why?

Top answer

In some contexts, it would be fine: How do you think the first act of the play went? How do you think I got here? It normally, however, is not a substitute for "what": What do you think of my new haircut?

I see. So, in the two examples, the question word 'how' is used to ask how the first act went or how someone got here. But in general terms, we ask what (instead of how) people think of something.

How do you like my new haircut? ~ What do you think of my new haircut?
