How do you tell when they are non-action verbs and when they are linking verbs?

Hi teachers,
How do you tell when they are non-action verbs and when they are linking verbs? Because 'be' for example can be both.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Jim,
Thank you so much for your reply.
It's really helpful. How come you always have the right place to look at? I can predict what you are going to say, 'Magic'

Thinking SpainDo you agree with this explanation?
No. Here's a counterexample.

The guests are here.

(here is not a noun phrase, an adjective, or a prepositional phrase)

And by the way, other kinds of verbs can be followed by all those things too, so this really doesn't separate one kind of verb from the other kind.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your reply. So, there are exceptions to that explanation! This refutes the explanation!!

Best,

And note my additional remark, added later.

Those were action verbs, and you said stative, so I'll have to change the examples.

Gary has a brother.
...
It belongs to me.

Hi Jim,

Off Topic
How can I write a sentence like the one you have of 'Nietzsche'?
In fact I would like to write this one, "Who dares to teach must never cease to learn" - John Cotton Dana

It goes in your profile if I'm not mistaken. I think it's called a "signature"

In the upper right you pull down a menu by your name and select "Settings", then within that you click on the tab called "Signature" or something like that.

Let me know if you can't find it and I'll investigate it.

Hi Jim,
Thank you for your help. I've already did it. It was really easy after your explanation.
