How do you signify that you have stopped listing?

Say you have a sentence like "I shadowed butcher, bakers and merchants trying to find a bite to eat". I want to communicate that the subject (I) is trying to find something to eat. However, it currently seems like I am still listing and that the subject is shadowing merchants that are trying to find a bite to eat. Can I use punctuation to amend this?

You need "the butcher" or "butchers."
