How do you say these sentences?

Could you tell - Is this the right way to say these sentences ?

1. Context : Question asked to a law student.

So when was the first time it occurred to you that you wanted to be a lawyer.

Is there any other way to ask this question ?

2. Context : A student preparing for judicial services exam.

Have you always wanted to prepare for judicial services exam or it just happened all of a sudden.

Is there a better way to ask this question?

Thanks
