how do you read this sentence?

I have trouble saying "we have received no complaints to date." It sounds the same as "we have received no complaints today."
so how do you guys prounpunce "to date?" same with "today?" if it does then how to make sure what you hearing is what the other person saying?

Usually the context would give a clue as to which is meant. Other than that, a speaker might emphasize the T in date or the AY in day if they thought it necessary to avoid confusion. It's not something that seems to cause much confusion among native speakers, in my experience anyway.
