How do you properly reference a source inside an essay (before a quote from them, for example)

How do you reference a book or article in your essay? For example:
According to The Name of this Article, “quotation.”
Do you italicize the name of the article in the essay, or put quotes around it? And is it different for different types of sources?

Okay, thank you for the reply. I have tried googling this and it surprises me how hard it is to find exactly what I'm looking for. Most websites give examples like "According to Johnson, "quote"" instead of the actual article names. I will try searching "quotation formatting" again, I probably just didn't look hard enough!
