STAY-thumb is a nice easy way to remember it, please don't make the common error of adding the 'r' to make it STRAY-thumb, or pronounce it STAT-ham - that really annoys, but to be fair that is what it looks like.
I think the weirdest I've ever been called was 'SCRATCH-um'!
