How do you feel about it

Hi. Asked something similar a few days ago, but didn't provide much context, so I would just ask again if "How do you feel about it?" is appropriate here:

"I heard about your mother. (She has died) I know you weren't close at all, but how do you feel about it?"

"I feel fine. She was never there for me. I barely knew her, so it's hard to feel anything for her I guess."

Thank you.

This is better with a context. But only two people that are very close would talk frankly like this.
