How do you call in English a "Pre-legal case" in the automotive industry?

00How would you call a "Pre-legal case" in the automotive industry? In French, we call that an "expertise", which is the process undertaken when 2 experts (person very knowledgeable in the field of automobile) - one being from the "car manufacturer" and from the "customer" side - met check everything in the car to determine the responsabilities and determine if the manufacturer or the customer has to pay...02br

00Would in your opinion exists an English equivalent or should I stick with "Pre-legal case" as it is the last step before going to court?02br

I think your looking for the term "claim". When some one is involved in an accident and the insurance company is notified,most law firms and insurance companies give you a claim number. If a claim cannot be settled, and a complaint is filed, then it becomes a law suit or litigation.
