How do you call a piece of pearl?

Hi

I was wondering whether there is a special word to quantify a piece (ball) of pearl. For example, do we call it a ball of pearl (highly unlikely, I know!) or a unit of pearl? Is there a more accurate and professional term for that? Thank you.

Cheers
Peter

It is simply 'a' pearl. Pearl can be the non-count substance (a pearl necklace) and also the individual count noun (there are 24 pearls in the bag).
