HOW DO YOU ASK A SMART QUESTION?

I hope someone can help me with my question

I want to ask a friend of mine why is she practicing a certain musical piece at her friend’s house. I don’t want her to tell me “why” she is practicing the musical routine but instead I want her to tell me what is the routine for. Is it for a Fifteen, a Birthday party? I don’t know how to ask the question. I came up with a couple of questions myself but I’m unsure if they are correct.

1. For what you are going to be practicing at her house tomorrow?

2. For what you are going to be practicing at her house tomorrow?

Top answer

Your questions are not native, and mentioning the place ( her hous e) and time ( tomorrow ) will inevitably confuse the point of your question. What is the purpose of your practicing the musical piece? is your best chance for the answer you seek.

Mister MicawberWhat is the purpose of your practicing the musical piece?
That sounds a bit "tie and lace-up shoes" to me. I'd just say something like: At what function will you be playing the music you are going to practice at Mary's house tomorrow?

I don't see that "At what function" is any less formal.

Where will you perform this piece you're working on?
