How do yoiu leave it standing?

Hi, I have two questions.

1. How do you divide a word when there isn't enough room to print the whole word on a line? Do you do it by syllables? Do you hyphenate words by syllables too?

2. Why does the sentence below have the verb "were" and not "was"?

... provided as if there were not enough room on the line ...

Maybe,

" Were " here is used in subjuctive. We use " were " because the action which is possible rather than real.

" As if " conjunction indicates that the action is not real.

Another problem is I thought " provided " is a conjunction.

I guess you could delete the word " provided " since as if is good enough.
