How do I summarize text? Every time I ask this question to people they just give me some circular definition -- something along the lines of "just write what's important." But how would one know what's important?
For a math problem, it can be broken down into simpler steps.
Is there a way to find out what's important in a text document step by step?

Certainly the most unusual event was that you saw a murder -- but this is not the same thing is importance.
What do I think the most important thing? I don't know. No one event seems more important than any other. Is walking to school more important than eating a hamburger? Is having a shower more important than watching TV?
