Here is the SOP

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

In subsequent to completion of my graduation in Applied Psychology Honors, from a well known and one of the best university of India, Delhi University, I can now discover myself at an upright position as a budding psychologist. I am now poised to do Masters in Forensic/Criminal Psychology from your esteemed institution. I had always enjoyed being a student of psychology, gaining theoretical and practical knowledge about the human behavior, now am more eager to study the criminal(s) behavior. It has always been as a part of my interest to contribute for the society and humankind to help them making a better place to live in.


During the course of my study I was subjected to a scrupulous theoretical and practical knowledge of my subjects, which helped me gain substantial understanding of various facets of human behavior and their varying analysis. The content of course during the first two years was diverse which included, English, History of Delhi, General Psychology, Research Methodology & statistics, Systems and schools of psychology, Social Psychology, organizational psychology. Towards the end of the course, i.e. the third and final year, the subjects were principally focused to Abnormal psychology, Counseling Psychology and Developmental Psychology. I also had field work in hospital setting for clinical practice and school & non-school setting for counseling practice and a visit to a reputed NGO for a report under a guided supervision, as a part of my curriculum in the learning process.


I would also like to mention that during the course of my education I had also done a basic computer education course from a reputed institution for a basic knowledge enhancing purpose, it included MS Office, C++, Operational database etc. which was for 6months. Furthermore I have attended various psychological workshops in and outside the college.


Ever since childhood my interests include, painting, sketching, reading spiritual books. Besides all this am keen to know more about psychoanalysis, spirituality and a big admirer of Freud. I have actively taken part in various college activities and event management and were also a part of the creative department of magazine committee of my college.


In addition, I have done a voluntary work for an NGO namely Manovikas, a rehabilitation centre, for mentally and physically challenged children and adults, where the individuals were educated to be self-dependent through vocational guidance to the adults and learning guidance to the children, and they were also provided to have basic grooming skills. Here, I was supposed to observe and interact with children having various mental disorders, such as autism, mild to moderate mental retardation, schizophrenic symptoms, and I also conducted a basic mental retardation test on two students to know about their daily mental and physical functioning and to know what else could be done for their betterment. I was also asked to teach the basic motor and reading skills to the students with mild to moderate mental retardation. It was an overwhelming experience as for the first time I had encountered people with such severe disabilities. But, by the time I ended my visits I had a knowledge and experience, although not for long span, but a qualitative experience to how to deal with challenged people.


In the meanwhile I got motivated to contribute to my society by helping the individuals come out of their problems and grief they unknowingly enter into in the process of facing the challenges they meet in their life, and how they enter into various solutions which sometimes can be harmful for others. The thought to provide them help gave me a direction to pursue forensic psychology, as the crime rate in every society and every part of the world is increasing swiftly. The reasons behind the various crimes differ from person to person, but similarity in all of them is that all the criminals fail to meet an appropriate solution for a particular problem and they conclude it from a negative perspective.


Now, when I have completed my graduation am looking forward to have some nice and enriching exposure in the same field, to enhance the arena of my skills, knowledge and understanding to the practical aspects. To achieve my goals and ambition, I need to learn much more about current developments and techniques in the forensic psychology and its applications and acquire hands-on experience psychological practice. A Master's Degree will provide me with theoretical understanding, an in depth idea of practical approaches and research skills to enable me to develop an expertise in the core areas of criminology. I would like to investigate specific problem areas such as the application of quantitative analysis to understanding various issues in crime rate and the therapies which could be used with the criminals to know more about their mental activities.


Since psychology is the core of all human behavior & the most significant way to know about a person, I wish to carve the skill through a course in Forensic/Criminal Psychology in your venerated university. Forensic psychology in our country is still an emerging field and the awareness among the masses is still under-rated. I wish to be a global citizen in true sense and hence, I wish to deepen my wisdom of knowledge by pursuing postgraduation & to be able to contribute towards the development of healthy society by means of providing my skills and your knowledge. Practicing masters in Forensic Psychology is an obvious next step towards achieving my goal of a career in investigation as a Criminologist. I am confident that studying in the department of psychology in your esteemed university would be a valuable experience towards realizing my ambition.
I imagine myself carving a place for myself in the field of psychology through an eternal ardor & unyielding commitment to the subject area & to realise my ambition of being able to bring about encouraging change in society, not only in my country but also in the world. I would be grateful for a favorable consideration of my application for the 2009-10 terms.
