How do I lead my students to ???

Differentiate between the past simple and the present perfect....I would like to convince them by supporting my lesson with pictures and examples...

The simple past would should something that happened in the past, but does not continue today. The present perfect would should something that started in the past and continues until the present time. You could show someone smoking a cigarette in 2004.

The simple past would should something that happened in the past, but does not continue today. The present perfect would should something that started in the past and continues until the present time. You could show someone smoking a cigarette in 2004. He smoked several years ago. Then you show someone smoking now. He has smoked since 2004.
