How do I improve my poem?

First, I am doing a project where I attempt to copy a style of a peot/poem
I am using Walt Whitman's "A child said, what is the grass?"
How can I improve mine?

My father said, son, what is the light?
My father said, “Son what is the Light?”
“I do not know” I say to my father
And He is silent.

And I ponder this thought, I ponder the Light
This one thing that is in abundance yet a mystery

I guess Light is the warmth that we experience
I guess Light is the mother of beauty
I guess Light is the shadow of dark
I guess Light is the highway for the clouds

To others, Light has meaning
To the mother, Light is nutrient to her baby
To the father, Light is a shower of strength
To the child, Light is…

But to me, what is Light?
Can I even give Light meaning?
To me
To me Light is the window on my wall, only expressing itself
Hard to spot or see but still there, existing.
To me Light is the sun, blazing and boiling, drying and burning,
Killing and maiming, yet still it brings life.
To me Light is beautiful and wonderful and awful and blissful.

I tell this all to my father, all the beauty and wonders and horrors of Light.
And He is silent.
