This is difficult to answer, because of I do not know what it is for.

Basically you use " ". Quote EXACTLY what the person said. If there are missing words use, [ ].

example:

Jimmy wrote me this note, "not in today, too sick".

Writing it as:

"not in today, [because he's] too sick".

adding the [ ] helps the reader under
