eg She cried for an hour.
eg She didn't understand at all.
eg She said nothing at all.
eg She couldn't go to sleep all night.
eg She wants to live with her Daddy.
eg She started breaking dishes,

It's Simple Past because they are talking about how sh reacted at the time she was told..

Compare this version, which talks about her current condition. This is also fine.
Dorothy: She's 7 now, right? How is she taking it?
Ashley: I think she is taking it pretty well. She'll be better off without her father.

You could say this.
Dorothy: She's 7 now, right? How has she taken it?
Ashley: I think she has taken it pretty well. She'll be better off without her father.
But this makes it sound to me like she has finished reacting, and I don't think that is very likely.
