How did he end up there?

Which are correct:

1) He went to London with big dreams. But how did he end up there? In a shoddy flat with a part-time job as a waiter.
2) He went to London with big dreams. But in London he ended up in a shoddy flat with a part-time job as a waiter.
3) He went to London with big dreams. But he ended up in London in a shoddy flat with a part-time job as a waiter.

I don't like '3'. It seems to me that the sentence is implying that his being in London was somewhat unexpected for him.

Gratefully,
Navi.
