"How could I set …/… How could I be setting"?

How could I set a good example to my kids/children to follow? How could I be setting a good example to my kids/children?

I don't see any reason to be tentative about it by using 'could' instead of 'can'. 'to follow' is not necessary because that's what 'a good example' is for. 'be setting' is definitely wrong.
