how contemporary is modern?

Does the highlighted sentence mean that the museum's conception of modernism was not a contemporary one? (i.e. it was modern but not as much contemporary)?

Context:

In short the basic question being posed to MoMA was: how contemporary is modern? By its own definition the museum identified itself as a guardian of the modern classic’s unique aura and autonomy. Thus, as Tom Eccles reports, while the museum wished to commission – via its so-called Projects Committee – contemporary works from living artists, ‘it would not commission works that represented or reinterpreted works within its collection’, believing itself to have a responsibility ‘to act as a protective force on behalf of the original work’.

I would guess so. 'Art' is peculiarly coy with its terms, but I read 'Modern Art' as a specific period which is no longer contemporary (i.e., of 'now').
