How come Year 1900 Spelled "Nineteen Hundred"??

When I spelled year 1909 as “One thousand And Nine Hundred Nine”
People yelled at me “no, it’s nineteen oh nine”

Later on I spelled year 2009 as "Twenty oh nine"
Again they yelled at me “No, it’s Two Thousand and Nine”

A week later, they ask me to spell year 1900, without a doubt I shouted ,
“It must be one thousand and Nine hundred or Nineteen oh oh Isn’t IT?”
This time they go crazy and laugh to dead,
I wonder why?
They said “no Richie boy, it’s Nineteen hundred!”

I was like, where did ‘Thousand’ goes? Shopping mall or something?

Can someone please explain to me why year 1900 spelled as "Nineteen Hundred"?

Think of dates on the century marks this way:

100 = One hundred (CE, BC, BCE, AD = these are references to the zero-marker).
200 = Two hundred
500 = Five hundred.
1000 = A thousand. (we could say Ten Hundred, but no one ever does this.)
1100 = Eleven hundred.
etc.
1900

So, is it okay to say Nineteen Oh Oh?
