How can I use the word 'missing' as distinct from the word 'lost'? Is my sample sentence using it correct?

My notebook computer has been missing. I don't know who the thief is.

In British English, the expression is "gone missing." But that is similar to "lost."
For a different meaning, use the word with the definition that you want:

My notebook computer has been stolen.
My notebook computer is missing and I assume it has been stolen.
