The responses to the question are exactly the same in phrasing and meaning whether it is a negative or a positive question. g. " which should but generally doesn't require the opposite response from the positive question.

  • But people don't actually speak this way, so if you try to logically parse what someone is saying, you might end up thinking they mean the exact opposite from what they actually mean.
  • That's why the negative questions are generally answered with more than a simple "yes" or "no"; they require elaboration to be clear.

The responses to the question are exactly the same in phrasing and meaning whether it is a negative or a positive question.

e.g.

"Don't you mind?"
"No, I don't."

means exactly the same thing as

"Do you mind?"
"No, I don't."

In general, it's better to avoid negative questions because "Don't you mind?" is logically equivalent to "Do you not mind?"
