How can I understand this sentence?

Hi, there.
I can't understand the meaning of the following sentence from a high school textbook:
"Escaping past the British ships whose duty it was to keep him prisoner, on March 1, 1815, he landed on the French coast with a few hundred faithful followers, and marched toward Paris."
Could you tell me, please?
