How can I understand this sentence?

How can I understand this sentence?

This excerpt is from my grammar book:
"In tow ways, the role of the operator requires a reassessment of the account of clause structure given in 2.13-24 First, the operator is a single word which has a direct function in a clause; second, the division of a clause into subject, operator, and predication cuts across its division into S, V, O, C, and A, so that we entertain two alternative constituent analyses of the same structure. On these points."

I am wondering how I can understand "cuts across."
Could you expalin it for me, please?

due to the role of the operator, there are two different ways to do a lexical (structural) analysis of the clause. There are two different parsings depending on the model you use to divide up the words and phrases.
