How can I understand "as much as" and "even better"?

This is an excerpt from a newspaper article:
"But as much as we would have liked the feeling of the wind in our hair, we liked the idea of intact brains even better."

How many degrees do they like the idea of intact brains?
The same, or twice?

This "as much as" is not making an actual comparison of quantity. It is different use, a set expression, meaning something like "even though".
