How can I teach "the"

I'm teaching English in Asia.

I've noticed that almost every student has trouble with where to put "the" in a sentence.

For example, they will write: The little prince went to castle.

They always forget to put "the"

How can I teach them this?????

Thank you.

Hi. I also teach in Asia, and have been doing so for 15 years. For languages that have no article, it is a difficult struggle; in fact, any L2 language feature that does not exist in L1 is the most difficult thing to teach.

  • I have found no secret beyond reminding them over and over in a brief and patient way, just tossing the missing article in every time they speak (writing is another problem, but generally if they start using a feature in the spoken language, it will carry over to the written, more easily than vice versa).
  • Trying to drum in the theory does not contribute much to success.
