what is your view of examinations?

Examinations are one of the most popular methods of evaluating the learning ability of students. The benefits and drawbacks of this method are still a matter of debate. In my view, examinations have more disadvantages than advantages.

First of all, the benefits of traditional exams are significant. The expenditure spent on this method is quite reasonable. To create an exam, for example, the teachers simply pick up appropriate exercises on the question bank which might stay the same for many years. In addition, the examinations could help the students remember as well as reinforce their knowledge. In fact, some students could forget the fundamental knowledge throughout the learning process; without exams, they might not have enough motivation to revise their knowledge, and then they might not get into higher education as a result. Generally, there is a lot to be gained from this method.

Nevertheless, exams also have problems. They may be affordable for the teachers but can be a financial burden on the students. For example, the tuition fees cost them a fortune in preparation for the university entrance examination, which can happen in some Asian countries. Furthermore, it is not fair when the students who are in wealthy families can have a better teacher than those not. Additionally, although the prime objective of exams is to help the students review their knowledge, the tendency of many is rote learning. While doing this, they do not understand the underlying principles of subjects. In short, the exams can be expensive for the students and not reflect their actual learning capacity.

To sum up, exams can save teachers money but cost students a lot of tuition fees, and rote learning can make the objective of the exams ineffective. Because of this, I believe that the disadvantages of exams outweigh the advantages.
