How can I express ideas through questions with second conditionals?

What I wanted to express through the following sentence is that students who need to be archaeologists couldn't achieve what they need if there wasn't history subjects in university curriculums. I just wanted to express the idea through a question with the invasion of the second conditionals. Please someone let me know whether the following sentence is correct in terms of grammar.

Mainly focusing on such cutting-edge subjects, nonetheless, does not mean that art subjects should be removed completely from the university curriculums. Were they, for example, to ignore history courses, how someone interested in archaeology and need to be an archaeologist would achieve their target?
