What is the context?

An audience is addressed: Ladies and gentlemen.

In polite company, you can use "Sir" and "Ma'am."

There are impolite terms, such as "boy."

African Americans can address each other as "brother." It is respectful.

I would never address a person "Hello, adult male." It is ridicuolous.

Hi,

You mean he said

eg What do you think, kid ?

It's not really necessary for you to call him anything when you reply.

Informally:

A: What do you think about this, kid?

B: I think it's great. What do you think, dude? (also pops - it's a little bit disrespectful, and can be used as slang if the man is old enough to be your father. It stresses that you are young and cool, and he is of the older generation, and old-fashioned, out of touch with the youth)

Until they understand the nuances, in my opinion learners of English are well-advised to
