How can I avoid repetetion?

Hi,

How can I avoid the second "2 seconds" in the below sentence?

What other corrections are needed?

"Each light was kept switched on for 2 seconds maximum (within this time, the driver should press the switch to turn off the light). If the the driver fails to respond, the light would turn off after 2 seconds. The driver's failure to respond was recorded as a missed response.

If the the driver fails failed to respond ( within those couple of seconds) , the light would turn of f. after 2 seconds.
