I found this phrase on google. 1) BlackBerry Z10 has a height of 130mm, a width of 65.5mm and a thickness of 9mm. That is only just a few mm shy of the 123.8mm x 58.6mm x 7.6mm of the iPhone 5.
2) I don't have a caliper handy to measure, but the outside diameter of the shaft is just a few millimeters shy of being the diameter of a triple A (AAA) battery.
Perhaps a little. Also a bit casual and conversational.
Note that in both cases it's not an exact amount. It's just 'a few mm shy of . . . '. 'Shy of' does not seem to me like a precise and technical kind of expression.
