How are the following phrases different?

I learned the word 'disparage' has the same meaning as criticize'. I knew 'criticize ', but I was not familiar with 'disparage'. Is it ok to say, " We disparaged our president" instead of 'criticized our president?
Is there any difference in its connotation?
Glad if someone helps me.
