Houses in US (equipment and other stuff)

Hi guys,
I just finished an translation of the movie called Merge(my last paid translation this year, uff, finally) . Actually, it's a very interesting show from the US with the actress Lisa Rinna (I think you know her, she played in Melrose Place) where the goal of every episode is to merge the furniture of one particular "just married" couple, where the bride and groom have absolutely different styles, in the way which will satisfy both of them...Okay here are my questions.

1) Introduction of that couple:

Shawn(bride) is a forty-four retail sales rep whose lively, whimsical style features a healthy dose of homemade art and colorful knick knacks. John (groom) is a fifty year old commercial airline pilot who clearly spends more time flying than he does decorating. Bare walls and broken in furniture(????? Please what do you call in US broken-in furniture? Builded in furniture??) highlight John’s low-maintenance style. Sounds like a Merge made in heaven, but when these two first met, their relationship was decidedly down-to-Earth. (????? What does it mean went down-to-earth??)

2) Please what kind of furniture in US you call consul? I didn't find it in the dictionaries....It looks like a little cabinet. Does it have another synonyms?

3) Designer Kahi Lee is wondering, how she will put their furniture together:

John’s house is big, and it’s pretty barren. So I knew that a lot of Shawn was going to have to come into this Merge to make it work (??? Did she say that most important factor during the merging process is gonna be the Shawn's style???). I went with a Havana theme so I could combine Shawn’s tendency towards rich colors and fun pieces with John’s love of dark woods and cigars.

4) Lisa, the host in that show, works on the design of one table, she said: "You know Kahi, I used to the BUS GIRL , so this work is familiar to me, it's taking me back, it's taking me back"....Please what is BUS Girl? A hostess?
5) Finall question, I have a problem with the synonym for the furniture called hutch, please may I call it dresser?

many thanks guys in advance!!!

Best Regards

Furniture could be either "broken in" (used, like a comfortable pair of shoes) or "built in" (permanently part of the house, like a bookcase built into a wall). I'm not sure which idea you're going after here. "down to Earth" means ordinary (like average people), in contrast to heavenly.

  • A consul would be more commonly labeled as a "console table", meaning a half-round table that goes in a hallway.
  • Yes, "a lot of Shawn" would mean a large amount of Shawn's personality, style, or effort, and she's saying it will be necessary for the success of the merge.
