Housekeeper; countable/uncountable?

Hi.

I came here early in 1783 when my mistress was married, to look after her. And when she died, I stayed here as housekeeper.

'Housekeeper' can be understood to be a kind of title. If there can be only one such titleholder at a time, the article is dropped in many situations. The article is usually omitted after such verbs as elect, make, appoint and be, for example.

He was elected chairman.
They made him king.
Who was appointed prime minister?
