I need a room for tonight. Or

I need a room tonight.

I know both can be used but is oneconsidered more formal than the other? What do the grammar experts think?

I would say "I need a room for the night."

Actually, I would say "Do you have a room for one night?" if I were standing in the hotel lobby. They would understand I meant this night, tonight.
