Hot spot

Hi.

The nation's "hot spots" for women entrepreneurs are clustered in the western part of the United States. Idaho and Wyoming are tied for first place, followed by Utah, Nevada, and Arizona as the five states in the United States where the greatest growth and expansion in women-owned businesses occurred.

Is the underlined phrase interchangeable with "focal points" in the given context?

Top answer

I would say not. 'Hot spots' conveys a sense of energy and success and even, perhaps, excitement. 'Focal points' is a cooler, more neutral expression.
