hostile situations

The vulture birds I saw were big. Then I saw the eagles which were shy. I threw few pebbles at them to make them fly. Yet they did not move. I guessed they got used to these hostile situations.

Are they OK?

'Hostile' is a slightly odd word here, but I guess it's OK.
