Hoster meaning

Hi,

What does a "hoster" mean? I found in urban dictionary it refers to a middle aged man still living at home is that true? I am not native and I used this word in the business context and now I am not sure whether it is professional enough, or it is ruining the reputation for english native speakers. Any response appreciated.

Regards,
Maros

Anonymous I found in urban dictionary My simple advice: do not use the Urban Dictionary. It is unmonitored and unreliable. It is slang-based, disreputable and often obscene.

Urban Dictionary lists definitions for current slang, but it has no quality control. The idea may be right, or it may be one person's idea, or even, one person's attempt at a joke.

I have never heard this word and I would not know what it means. Do not use it in future business contexts.

I don't know what you mean by "ruining the reputation for English native speakers."

Hi

You definitely should not use words from Urban Dictionary in a business context

There is formal English and there is informal English; and I'd guess that's the same for all languages. For formal usage there are plenty of sources including, of course, here

But informal English is sometimes slang-based, disreputable and obscene. When people are using words in that way

... I should mention, in passing, that I once tried to post a word on Urban Dictionary. It was innocent and genuine, but it was nixed by the editors. So I think there is quality control there, it's just different from what you might expect

Thank you for correcting me Barbara. By ruining the reputation I meant for example a situation where I use English word which to me sounds right, but a native speaker might find it strange, offensive etc. (this can happen by accident)

I used it as a brand name "SwiftHoster", which is referring to website hosting services. But when I googled the word, strange translations came up from thos

That use of "host" is well established.

You do not need to worry about the slang meaning of "hoster" in this case.
