Host

Hello. )
There are lots of IT books and articles, that use the word host.

I have different definitions.

I think, that I should start from the definition of noun host.

First definition

(Computer Science) A computer containing data or programs that another computer can access by means of a network or modem. http://www.answers.com/topic/host

Second definition

(n) (1) A computer system that is accessed by a user working at a remote location. Typically, the term is used when there are two computer systems connected by modems and telephone lines. The system that contains the data is called the host, while the computer at which the user sits is called the remote terminal. http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/h/host.html

Third definition

The computer being accessed is called the "host". (LogMeIn Free - Getting Started Manual)

Fourth definition

A computer that provides a particular service to a user. (Friendly finger manual)

I need to confess, that these entries I have only because I thought, that they are clear.

There are others. And in similar contexts I can't understand the real meaning of the verb host.

I've found only one, and it is quite confusing:

To provide the infrastructure for a computer service. For example, there are many companies that host files, programs, applications or even a Web server for companies and individuals. In the case of a Web server, it means that they provide the hardware, software, and communications lines required by the server, but the content on the server may be controlled by someone else.

Here are two sentences.

The DNS server should contain forward lookup zones for each of the domains being hosted.

The DNS server should contain reverse lookup zones for each IP subnet range being hosted.

Could you help me please with the comprehensive definition of the verb host?

What happens when some recourse is hosted on the network?

I can suggest, that it (for example site, database, file) is being placed on some server (IIS, SQL) and then accessed (used) by clients.

Thank you. )

A host name is a name that is assigned to a host that uniquely identifies it on a network and thus allows it to be addressed without using its full IP address.
